Homework

Homework extends the concepts taught in the classroom. The South Whittier Board of Trustees believes students’ education is the responsibility of both school and home. Homework is a valuable and necessary part of a student’s education. Homework helps to build responsibility, discipline and study habits. Listed are some of the kinds of activities assigned for homework:
  • Daily assignment extension and / or completion
  • Project assignments which may be of extended duration.
  • Experimental or research experiences
  • Interest and hobby projects: library and independent reading, family excursions, television and radio programs
Time requirements will vary according to:
  • Concentration and study habits of the student
  • The rate at which the student works
  • The age and vitality of the student
Recommended daily maximums for homework are:

        Kindergarten        15 minutes per day        3 – 4 days per week
        Grades 1 – 3         60 minutes per day        4 days per week
        Grades 4 – 6         90 minutes per day        4 – 5 days per week
